MATHEMATICIAN, ASTRONOMER
EUDEMUS OF RHODES (fl. 350 - 290 BC)
Life A contemporary of Theophrastus, Eudemus studied in Athens, where he was a student and associate of Aristotle. After Aristotle's death he went to Rhodes, where he founded an "Aristotelian School". The third person to write a history of mathematics (after Xenocrates and Theophrastus), he also wrote histories of arithmetic, astronomy and the exact sciences in general.

Fragments of his works are preserved in Alexander of Aphrodisias and Simplicius. Geminus (1st century BC) also wrote a "History of mathematics" based on Eudemus, now lost.
